MISSION
Description

The Industrial Electronics Lab (LEI) is active in power electronics used in energy conversion and energy storage, in modelling and simulation of systems, including control strategies and control circuits.
LEI focuses its research activities along three principal axes.
The first concerns power electronics, with the development of new converter structures or topologies, or dedicated to specific applications. Beneath many different application-oriented options, LEI research activities include a specific topic with an original approach, namely the developing of multilevel converters with asymmetric designs using medium frequency transformation.
The second axis concerns energy conversion in general, with its management and storage. Flexibility and rapid intervention are the main contribution of power electronics in this field which are particularly pertaining to renewable energies, classical examples of which are photovoltaic sources or variable speed wind generators. Among the applications developed at LEI, supercapacitors for energy storage in traction systems are worth mentioning. They have been developed for several vehicles, such as buses, diesel-electric locomotives or light motorcycles.
The third axis concerns the modelling and simulation of systems, as well as the concept and design of control strategies and control circuits. In this field, many new applications need to be investigated, particularly complex and multidisciplinary systems. In order to analyse the functionality and characteristics of such systems, new dedicated methodologies are required.

Power electronics

Power electronic systems allow to convert electrical energy between different voltage levels and operating frequencies (including DC), with very high efficiencies and power densities and enable a highly dynamic control of the power flow. Current tendencies target the development of systems with high power densities while at the same time providing fast dynamic responses. Power electronics are also a key technology for providing intelligent, active interfaces linking distributed generation and storage systems. In the field of high-power and medium-voltage applications, different techniques of multilevel converters are expected to play a significant role in the development of future networks. Another research area directly related to the above, is active power filtering to cope with the increasing sensibility of electrical networks to distortions caused by harmonic injection. Novel control strategies for enhancement of the frequency spectrumof the electric grid have been developed.
Current research activities:
• Multilevel converters with medium frequency DC/DC and DC/AC converters, flexible interfaces.
• Frequency converters with high efficiency.
• Converters with interleaved channels.
• New commutation mechanisms.

Energy management and storage

The association of power converters with the development of advanced storage technologies extends the ability to efficiently manage power fluxes. This opens the door to new applications of short-term energy storage such as smoothing power consumption or load levelling.
Current research activities:
• Energy storage, applications with supercapacitors and hybrid structures.
• Power supplies with storage for particle accelerators.
• Hybrid energy storage with compressed air and supercapacitors.

System modelling and simulation

When power converters are in the centre of energy management topics, the methodology aspects are of first relevance for modelling the complete systems. This is the case not only for the optimization of the dynamic behaviour or developing theoverall control, but also in the sense of finding optimal steady-state properties.
Current research activities:
• Modeling and interfacing of fuel cells.
• Modeling of electrolyte flow batteries.
BIOGRAPHY
Alfred Rufer (1951) received the M.S. degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1976. In 1978, he joined BBC/ABB where he was involved in the fields of power electronics and control, such as high-power variable-frequency converters for drives. In 1993, he became an Assistant Professor at EPFL.
Since 1996, he has been a full Professor and Head of the Industrial Electronics Laboratory, EPFL. He has authored or coauthored several publications on power electronics and applications, and he holds several patents.
In Alfred Rufer’s lab, the actual research activities focus on one hand on power converters, where several solutions and applications of multilevel converters have been studied, especially in the field of asymmetric or hybrid topologies.
Another important field initiated by Alfred Rufer is dedicated to supercapacitive energy storage, where many applications have been studied or are currently underway. New research and development activities have recently been presented, where alternative energy storage devices with reduced aging phenomena or are easier to recycle than classical batteries are investigated and modeled.
In 2006, Alfred Rufer was elected to the IEEE Fellow grade.
