MISSION
Polyelectrolytes, charged macromolecules, and their organized structures
- belong to an emerging class of materials and are one of the key topics, internationally, in polymer chemistry and physics.
- include synthetic compounds but also biopolymers, such as proteins, nucleic acids, or polysaccharides.
- play a central role in the life sciences and have increasing importance as specialty polymers in many fields including environmental technologies, biotechnology, and materials development.

Function and application are primarily based on electrostatic interactions with either low molar mass counterions, charged surfaces, or oppositely charged molecules. However, the interactions and related structure-property relationships are still far from being fully understood.

The aim of our research is to study polyelectrolyte interactions as a function of the macromolecular parameters, on one hand, and medium conditions and characteristics of the interacting partner, on the other hand. The research includes the synthesis of defined molecule architectures, their characterization, fundamental interaction studies, and the development of novel materials for various applications, preferably in the medical and biotechnological field. Of specific interest are hydrogels and hydrocolloids for tissue engineering, immobilization, and delivery systems with micro and nano dimensions.

Vision of Future Projects and Activities

Materials development has become the primary intention of the research. Materials development for two principal application directions is intended. These are materials for separation technologies and materials based on polyelectrolyte complex formation. The latter may range from containers for cell and/or drug immobilization to flat membranes and ionotropic gels, all of them goal-directed designed based on the knowledge of fundamental relationships between composition and performance parameters. Intelligent surfaces shall increase the biocompatibility. Applying designed polyelectrolytes and modified biopolymers, as well as advanced technologies, devices with defined and selective transport and delivery properties will be created.

For such development specific characterization is essential, which has to include the determination of colloidal, macromolecular and electrochemical parameters. Appropriate methods and techniques such as light scattering, analytical ultracentrifugation, chromatography, spectroscopy, rheology, or potentiometry are serving to establish parameter-properties relationships.

Analytical ultracentrifugation is one of our favored techniques.
