BIOGRAPHY
|
A Building Physicist by training, Darren worked for several years as a contract researcher and was latterly Senior Research Associate in Energy Modelling at Cambridge University before moving into industry. Subject areas included: passive downdraught evaporative cooling, simplified energy modelling of non-domestic buildings and urban-scale energy modelling.
From 2000 – 2004 worked with engineering consultancy BDSP Partnership UK as Associate and Head of BDSP Environmental. Worked on a variety or projects, providing environmental design / modelling consultancy, including: World Clasrooms (Future Systems); RIBA Award winning National Assembly for Wales and Mossbourne City Academy (Richard Rogers Partnership); BCO National Refurbished Workplace Award winning HM Treasury Building Refurbishment and Pelham Place (Foster and Partners), Columbia University Masterplan (Renzo Piano Building Workshop). Also responsible for R&D, the key project being SUNtool [A sustainable urban neighbourhood modelling tool], and was Senior Lecturer at the Architectural Association, 2002-2004.
Darren has been at LESO-PB/EPFL since October 2004, as group leader of Sustainable Urban Development and Co-Director of the Advanced Masters course on Architecture and Sustainable Development. Darren is currently responsible for three projects funded by national research programme 54 (PNR54) of the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS) and one by the European Commission. Research topics covered include ecosystemic modelling of urban metabolism, modelling of urban district resource flows, urban heat island modelling and thermal comfort.
