François is the Executive Director at the Energy Center of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he acts as business developer, researcher and lecturer. He has been working in the sustainable energy sector since 2001. His current research activities focus mostly on understanding the prospects and barriers (technical, policy, regulatory and socio-economic) of novel energy and clean technologies. He has acquired a deep understanding of the global energy challenges and the potential of innovative technology solutions to play a role in energy transitions.
In the past years, François has been increasingly helping leading corporates and finance organisations understand the complexities and seize opportunities in the cleantech sector, developing sector reviews and conducting due diligence work.
François is lead author of two major reports commissioned by the International Energy Agency (IEA), is author or co-author on over 30 scientific publications and journal articles, and lead author of two books on the Swiss energy transition. He is a founder and sits on the Board of Directors of technology companies Softcar Ltd. and Proxipel Ltd. that are active in the electric mobility and bioenergy sectors respectively. He also sits as expert in several official government commissions related to energy as well as in an expert group of the Swiss Academies of sciences.
Through his career, François worked at C-level with industry (leading car manufactures, power utilities, oil majors, etc.), financial organizations (hedge funds, PE/VCs, World Bank, etc.) and governments (Swiss, UK, Chile, European Commission, China, etc.), as well as with non-governmental and international organizations (International Energy Agency, European Space Agency, United Nations, WBCSD, IUCN). He has been involved in projects or has acquired direct working experience on all 5 continents. He speaks French, English and German, as well as some Spanish and Swiss German.
