Choosing the course of university studies back in Russia was complicated: I was passionate about biochemistry and molecular biology, though Russia back then was only marginally better-off in scientific funding than during the financial collapse of 1990s. Moreover, biology was never a science that fascinated the USSR leadership due to various reasons. Moving abroad wasn't an option back then, so I've entered the best technical university in Russia (at least math and physics were always supported by the Soviets), the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Department of Biological and Medical Physics, then moved to the Department of General and Applied Physics. During my studies there I was involved in training of the Russian national teams for participation in renowned international competitions: IBO, IJSO, IPhO. Besides I was happy that I had my own seminar course for the freshmen students of MIPT on introductory biochemistry and molecular biology. During the course of studies I've worked on multiple scientific projects with my own funding: under my supervision undergraduate students of MIPT were studying the effect of various flavonous substances on the treatment of cancerous cell lines of humans as a preparation of preclinical trials. For my BSc thesis I was studying the binding of various ligands to GPCRs embedded into nanodiscs membrane-modelling medium. It was a great time in the Laboratory for Perspective Research of Membrane Proteins at MIPT.
After having participated in the Summer Research Programme (SRP) at EPFL administrated by Alice Goodman (to whom I owe introduction to the expats' life in Romandie), I have applied to graduate school at EPFL and was accepted to EDBB and EDMS back in June 2015: I chose EDBB and Sebastian Märkl's lab (LBNC).
