After completing his studies in Zürich and Paris, Jean-Luc Benz earned his engineering degree (MSc) at the Ecole Spéciale des Travaux Publics (ESTP), Paris, in 1984.
From 1984 to 1999, he was successively a design engineer in the industry (Compagnie Générale des Eaux), a computer engineer in the services economy (Banque Française du Commerce Extérieur), and a head of department in the distribution industry (French subsidiary of the German group METRO), in Paris.
As Head of the Organization Department at METRO France, he supervised a team of IT engineers and business analysts who were in charge of managing the information system security, administrating the electronic data interchange (EDI), optimizing commercial and administrative processes, and supporting the end-users in the evolution of the information system.
In parallel, for 7 years he was a mathematics course instructor in the Social Advancement Program of a Parisian high school for vocational training.
In 1999, he joined the EPFL as Head of Operations of the Department of Communication Systems. Since 2002 he is Head of Infrastructures of the School of Computer and Communication Sciences, and as of 2008 also Exchange Coordinator for the students in Computer Science and in Communication Systems.
