Matteo Barsanti
Biography
I have always had an affinity for environmental sustainability themes and this led me to undertake a course of study in energy engineering, with the hope to directly and personally contribute to the environmental cause.I am currently a PhD candidate at EPFL (C. Binder, HERUS).
Besides the academic commitment, I’m a semi-professional inline hockey player for Hockey Club Milano Quanta team. This passion allowed me to live independently in Milan, while having several satisfactions winning the Italian A league twice and two world cup silver medals. Moreover, Politecnico di Milano awarded me with a scholarship for Sport merit (Watch also).
Mission
Despite the energy sector can rely on always more efficient and cheap technologies to press ahead the energy transition, still the main barrier towards a sustainable and completely decarbonized future is the lack of an effective way to orchestrate all the availableresources in an integrated and optimal way. For this reason I believe it is crucial to address the intrinsic complexity of the energy system through advanced simulation environments, where the technical dynamics are integrated with the social dynamics (increasingly impacting on the energy system's performance) in order to effectively address the challenges arising from the specificities of local resources and multiple stakeholders (e.g. single households, city, region).
Current work
Modelling Demand and Supply Dynamics in Socio-technical Energy Systems (Read More)This research is part of the joint research project MoMeEnT. The aim is to investigate the active role(s) of residential consumers in the Smart Grid paradigm, in order to assess how residential demand flexibility can support the energy transition, looking at multi-criteria performance indicators.
