Takafumi Usui was born in Tokyo, Japan. He received the Bachelor and the Master degree from Tohoku University in 2011 and 2013. During his master program, he spent one year at the Center for Energy Policy and Economics at ETH Zürich as an exchange student. In 2014, he started his PhD study at EPFL under the supervision of Prof. Philippe Thalmann. He is affiliated to the Laboratory of Environmental and Urban Economics (LEURE) as a doctoral assistant. His filed of interests includes energy and environmental economics, economic modeling, climate mitigation and adaptation, and stochastic simulation.
