Mission

PVlab's mission is to push the boundaries of photovoltaic science and foster the innovations needed to shape next-generation PV technologies. This ambition requires mastering the behaviour of PV materials across all scales — atomic, microscopic, and macroscopic. My contribution lies in the systematic microstructural characterization of PV cells and modules, directly informing strategies to enhance their efficiency and durability.

After completing my Master's and PhD in Physics at EPFL, specializing in Electron Microscopy, I joined the Centre for Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in Perth in 2000. Two years later, I returned to EPFL's Centre for Electron Microscopy (CIME) as a scientific researcher under Prof. C. Hébert, leading projects across materials science — including solid oxide fuel cells, photovoltaics, and metallurgy. During this period, I supervised 6 PhD students, contributed to teaching at bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, and provided training and support to TEM users.
In 2012, I joined the Laboratory of Photovoltaics and Thin-Film Electronics (PVlab) as Deputy Director. Alongside laboratory head Prof. Ballif, I oversee financial and human resources management while maintaining an active research role focused on the microstructural analysis of photovoltaic materials — spanning nanometric layers in PV cells to fully encapsulated PV modules. At PVlab, I have directed 5 PhD students to completion, with 2 more currently pursuing their theses.
