DescriptionLes activités du Laboratoire d'Électronique Industrielle (LEI) touchent au domaine de la conversion statique de l'énergie électrique.
Le LEI oriente ses recherches selon 3 axes principaux.
Le premier concerne l'électronique de puissance, avec le développement de nouvelles structures ou topologies. Des applications spécifiques sont également étudiées. Une des orientations du laboratoire concerne une recherche originale sur les convertisseurs multiniveaux asymétriques, avec des applications multiples, comportant notamment l'utilisation d'étages d'isolation à Moyenne Fréquence.
Le second axe de recherche concerne la conversion énergétique en général, avec sa gestion et son stockage. L'apport de l'électronique de puissance dans ce domaine se situe dans la flexibilité et la rapidité d'intervention. Le domaine des énergies renouvelables est particulièrement concerné par ces activités (Installations photovoltaïques, éoliennes, etc.). Parmi les recherches conduites au LEI, l'utilisation du stockage supercapacitif dans les systèmes de traction occupe une place importante. Ces applications concernent différents véhicules tels bus ou locomotives Diesel Electrique.
Le troisième axe de recherche concerne la modélisation et la simulation de systèmes, avec le développement de stratégies et circuits de réglage et commande associés. Dans ce domaine, beaucoup de nouvelles applications doivent être étudiées, en particulier pour les systèmes complexes et multidisciplinaires. Dans le but d'analyser les fonctionnalités et propriétés principales de tels systèmes, de nouvelles méthodologies appropriées sont indispensables.
Électronique de puissance
Les systèmes de l'électronique de puissance permettent de convertir les grandeurs électriques entre des niveaux de tension ou de fréquence fort différents, et avec généralement des rendements énergétiques élevés. Les tendances actuelles cherchent à développer d'une part des systèmes ayant des densités de puissance élevées, et présentant des réponses dynamiques rapides face aux flux de puissance à gérer. Dans le domaine des applications de grande puissance et dans le domaine de la Moyenne Tension, différentes techniques de convertisseurs multiniveaux sont appelées à jouer un rôle important dans le développement des réseaux de distribution du futur. Un autre secteur de recherche qui va de pair avec les axes précédemment définis est celui du filtrage actif de puissance, et qui devient actuellement un moyen élégant de résoudre des problèmes de distorsion harmonique. Dans ce sens, le LEI a également développé des stratégies d'amélioration de spectre pour les réseaux de distribution.

Gestion énergétique et stockage
En association avec le développement de techniques avancées de stockage d'énergie, les convertisseurs de puissance permettent de mieux gérer les flux de puissance et aboutissent à la définition de domaines nouveaux, tels celui du lissage de la puissance ou de l'égalisation des charges.

Modélisation et simulation de systèmes
Si les convertisseurs de l'électronique de puissance se trouvent au centre des activités de la gestion énergétique moderne, les aspects méthodologiques sont également de première importance pour analyser, représenter et optimiser le fonctionnement stationnaire et dynamique de ces systèmes, et pour développer des stratégies de réglage performantes.

Biographie
Originaire de Diessbach (BE), Alfred Rufer est né en 1951. Il obtient en 1976 le diplôme d'ingénieur électricien de l'EPFL et poursuit son activité dans le même établissement en tant qu'assistant à la chaire d'électronique industrielle. En 1993, il est nommé professeur-assistant au Laboratoire d'électronique industrielle. Au début 1996, il est nommé professeur extraordinaire.En 1978, il débute son activité dans l'industrie de l'électronique de grande puissance à la société ABB, Asea Brown Boveri à Turgi, où il contribue au développement d'entraînements réglés à fréquence variable. Dès 1985, il exerce la fonction d'assistant technique et de chef de groupe.
De 1988 à 1991, il poursuit le développement de nouveaux systèmes d'électronique de puissance dans différents domaines d'application.
A. Rufer est l'auteur et co-auteur de plusieurs demandes de brevet, ainsi que de plusieurs publications. De 1991 à 1992, il est chef d'un département de développement d'appareils d'électronique de réglage et de commande pour l'électronique de puissance. Durant son activité professionnelle dans l'industrie, il participe activement à l'enseignement technique dans plusieurs écoles d'ingénieurs.
