Statics I

Developing an understanding for static systems. Solution of isostatic systems in terms of reaction forces and internal forces (NVM diagrams)

Nonlinear analysis of structures

The course is based on assignments in which students either implement the nonlinear analysis from scratch (for models with truss elements) or use an open-source software (for models with beam elements). The topics that are covered are the following:
  • Truss models with material and geometric nonlinearity
  • Solution strategies for static loads
  • Total and incremental com

Research skills for engineers

The course prepares students for carrying out research-based Master projects. It teaches basics of scientific writing and presenting as well as concepts and tools that are useful over the course of a research project.

Seismic engineering

This course deals with the main aspects of seismic design of buildings and bridges. It covers different structural design and evaluation philosophies for new and existing reinforced concrete and unreinforced masonry structures.
