Biography
Suraj was born and raised in India, where he completed his early education and undergraduate studies. He earned a B.Tech degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University in 2020. During his bachelor’s, he specialized in mobile robotics and participated in several national and international robotics competitions, which sparked his interest in multidisciplinary engineering and innovation. Afterward, he pursued an MSc in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Bern, graduated in 2024 with a focus on electronics implants. Inspired by his work as a research assistant during his master’s studies, Suraj developed a keen interest in microfluidics and lab-on-chip technologies, which led him to pursue a Ph.D.Suraj began his Ph.D. in October 2024 with the Microfluidics Group at the Institute of Human-Centered Engineering at Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH). In January 2025, he joined the Ph.D. program in Electrical Engineering (EDEE) at EPFL and subsequently became a part of the Bio/CMOS Interface (BCI) Group. His Ph.D. is supervised by Prof. Sandro Carrara at BCI and co-supervised by Prof. Cedric Bessire at BFH.
As a Ph.D. candidate, Suraj is focused on developing innovative point-of-care diagnostic devices. His research combines microfluidics/lab-on-chip and image-based diagnostic techniques to create cost-effective, efficient, and accessible medical devices. These devices not only aim to decentralize medical diagnosis by providing on-site diagnosis, making healthcare more accessible and effective for communities around the world but also it is an step toward personalize medicine.
