Curriculum vitae

Florian Schueder studied Physics at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University from 2009 to 2015. He then pursued a PhD in Biophysics at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried from 2015 to 2020. From 2021 to 2024, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University. In 2025, he was a visiting scientist at ETH Zurich. Since 2026, he has been leading his own lab as an Assistant Professor at the School of Life Sciences at EPFL.

From light to life: optics and imaging in biology

BIOENG-313

This course introduces the principles of optics underlying modern biological imaging. Students learn how light interacts with matter, how optical systems form images, and how advanced fluorescence and super-resolution microscopy enable discoveries in biology and molecular medicine.
