Fields of expertise

My research is focused on understanding the ecology of aquatic microorganisms to ultimately promote water quality and develop novel biotechnological applications. My current interests include:

- Characterising the dynamics of microorganisms in alpine and polar lakes in response to environmental change.
- Monitoring of planktonic and benthic Cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems.
- Identification of mechanisms leading to the production of cyanotoxins in alpine and arctic lakes.
- Understanding microbial interactions among virus, bacteria and protists in freshwater ecosystems.
- Developing novel biotechnological applications based on the metabolic diversity of lake water bacteria.
- Exploring the production of metabolic water by cold-adapted arctic bacteria.

Biology

This course will cover the fundamental principles governing life and the living world. Topics will include the diversity of living organisms, cellular biology, genetics, evolution, and ecology. This course provides a foundation in biology, fostering critical thinking & analytical skills.

Hands-on bioinformatics for microbial meta-omics

This course will train doctoral students to use bioinformatic tools to analyse amplicon and metagenomic sequences. In addition, we will also touch upon meta-transcriptomics and meta-proteomics.
