Giann is working on the structural biology of Picornaviruses during the early stages of infection, specifically, to identify virus-receptor complexes of ERAV with integrin alpha2 beta1, structural intermediates to uncoating of Aphthoviruses (at the microsecond and longer timescales), and vaccine development of rhinoviruses using the SpyTag-SpyCatcher System. 

In EPFL, he is working under the LUXS and LND on a project that aims to overcome preferred orientation of glycoproteins in cryoEM using a mechanical oscillator.
