  • Massimo Mastrangeli got his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees (cum laude) in Electronic Engineering from the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa (Pisa, IT) in 2003 and 2005, respectively. He thereby specialized in digital phase detectors and microelectromechanical (MEM) high-frequency resonators. During 2005, he was also an intern at imec Belgium (Leuven, BE), working on the electro-mechanical characterization and FEM modeling of PolySiGe thin films for MEMS-above-IC co-integration. In 2010 Massimo received his Ph.D. degree in Materials Engineering from the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (MTM) of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. In his doctoral dissertation, produced in collaboration with imec Belgium, he pioneered fluidic and capillary self-assembly techniques for the integration of heterogeneous microsystems. During this appointment, he was also Visiting Scholar at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Washington (Seattle, WA, USA), at the Santa Fe Institute (Santa Fe, NM, USA) and at the BEAMS Department of Université Libre de Bruxelles (Bruxelles, BE). From October 2010 to September 2013, Massimo joined EPFL as Post-Doctoral Researcher. Since the beginning, he was part of the Distributed Intelligent Systems and Algorithms Laboratory (DISAL) lead by prof. Martinoli. Thereby he investigated the modeling and physical embodiment of self-organization in distributed intelligent systems across multiple physical scales. Since January 2012, Massimo was also Scientist at the Microsystem Laboratory (LMIS1) of prof. Brugger, whereby he developed microfluidics, inkjet printing and micro/nanofabrication for applications of self-assembly at microscale: self-assembly of liquid-filled sealed MEMS capsules, inkjet printing-based fabrication and packaging of polymeric microstructures with embedded functionalities, advanced integration of plastic electronics through capillary self-alignment, and capillarity-enhanced assembly of nanoparticles onto templated substrates. From October 2013 to March 2015, Massimo was Senior Scientist at the department of Micro, Electro And Mechanical Systems (BEAMS) of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Thereby he investigated capillary micromanipulation, wet granular matter and magnetomechanic self-assembly processes. From April 2015 to July 2017, Massimo was Research Associate in the Physical Intelligence Department of the Max Planck Institue for Intelligent Systems (Stuttgart, DE), where he worked on programmable self-organization of mesoscopic agents. From March 2016 to July 2017, Massimo was also Associated Member of the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems (Stuttgart, DE), studying the design and control of miniature soft microrobots with multimodal locomotion. Current affiliation: Since September 2014, Massimo is Guest Lecturer at EPFL's EDMI Doctoral School for the courses "Self-Assembly of Microsystems" (MICRO-620) and "Advanced micro- and nanofabrication: Top-down meets bottom-up" (MICRO-721), both hosted by prof. J. Brugger. Since September 2017, Massimo is Assistant Professor in the Electronic Components, Technology and Materials group of the Microelectronics Department of Delft University of Technology (Delft, NL). He is currently investigating organ-on-chip technology and nanoparticle-based bottom-up fabrication of nanodevices. Massimo has also competences in complex systems and music.

Advanced topics in micro- and nanomanufacturing: top-down meets bottom-up

    MICRO-724

This course introduces advanced fabrication methods enabling the manufacturing of novel micro- and nanosystems (NEMS/MEMS). Both top-down techniques (lithography, stenciling, scanning probes, additive techniques) and bottom-up approaches (self-assembly) are presented.
