Biography
Radivoje Popovic received the Dipl. Ing. degree in engineering physics from the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1969, and the M.Sc and Dr.Sc. degrees in electronics from the University of Nis, Yugoslavia in 1974 and 1978.
From 1969 to 1981, he worked for Elektronska Industrija in Nis, Yugoslavia, where from 1978 to 1981 he was head of CMOS department. From 1982 to 1993, he was with Landis & Gyr AG, Central R&D in Zug, Switzerland, where from 1991 to 1993 he was vice president.
In 1994 Popovic joined EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland), as extraordinary professor for microtechnology systems, and became ordinary professor in 1997. He taught courses in conceptual product design, semiconductor device physics, microelectronics, optical detectors, and integrated sensors; and he was adviser of 20 PhD students. Since 2010 he is professor emeritus.
Currently, he is chief technology officer of SENIS AG (www.senis.ch).
Popovic has published a book on Hall effect devices, and is author or co-author of about 280 technical papers and 93 patent applications. He is co-founder of start-up companies Sentron AG, Sentronis AD, Senis AG, Ametes AG, and Sensima Technology SA. He is member of Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences, Serbian Academy of Engineering Sciences, and senior member of IEEE.

Innovation track record
Radivoje Popovic has pioneered many innovations in the field of the magnetic sensors based on the Hall effect. He was the only or the main inventor, and lead the early development, of the following Hall magnetic sensors and products based on these sensors:
Vertical Hall Device [1], [2],
which is applied in the following products:
- The first electrical energy meter based on the Hall effect, manufactured by Landis and Gyr, Switzerland [3];
- The first 3-axis integrated Hall probe [4], manufactured by SENIS, Switzerland (This 3-axis integrated Hall probe is the enabling device in various magnetic measurement instruments for example, in the MMS-1-R Magnetic Field Scanner of SENIS, Switzerland, and the THM1176 3-axis teslameter / gaussmeter of Mertrolab Technology SA, Switzerland);
- The electronic compass built in the wrist watch T-Touch of Tissot, Switzerland.
Single-axis IMC-Hall Sensors [5], [6] (IMC-Hall is an integrated combination of planar Hall elements and Integrated Magnetic Concentrators).
The single-axis IMC-Hall structure is mostly used in current sensing Hall ASICs, such as the following:
- CSA-1V (developed by Sentron, Switzerland, now manufactured by Melexis, Belgium);
- MLX91205 (Melexis, Belgium);
- FHS 40-P/SP600 (LEM, Switzerland)
Two- or three-axis IMC-Hall Sensors [7], [8] (an integrated combination of planar Hall elements and a circular Integrated Magnetic Concentrator). The two- or three-axis IMC-Hall sensors are mostly used in angular-position-sensing ASICs, such as:
- 2SA-10 (originally Sentron, Switzerland, now Melexis, Belgium);
- MLX90333 (Melexis, Belgium; Melexis uses the brand name Tri-axis Hall technology, which is another name for the IMC-Hall Technology);
Currently, the IMC-Hall is the mostly used technology for angular position sensing in automotive industry.
The three-axis IMC-Hall Sensor is currently the dominant technology used for electronic compass in mobile phones. The main manufacturer is AKM, Japan (AK8975 3-axis compass), see:

Analysts predict the market for magnetic compass sensors will grow from the 8.7 million manufactured in 2008 to more than 540 million in 2013. Currently, AKM has a 70-80% market share of e-compass for smaretphones.

This design is based on an invention filed in 2000 by R.S. Popovic of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, Switzerland.
Circular Vertical Hall Device [9], which is applied in the following emerging angular position sensor ICs:

- AEAT-60xx, AEAT-6600 (Avago Technologies, USA and Singapore)
- Still another Angular Position Sensor IC (recently announced by an USA company).
Popovic has also lead the teams that developed several products, including the following:
The first analog and digital teslameters with a 3-axis fully integrated Hall probe [4] www.senis.ch; these teslameters are mostly used for testing and measurement of permanent magnets.
Hall probes and teslameters with unprecedentedly high resolution and accuracy, approaching those of NMR teslameters [10], [11]. These instruments are used for accurate magnetic measurements in particle accelerators, such as those in PSI, Switzerland, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, USA, and Argone National Laboratory, USA.
Most of these devices, products, and their applications are briefly described in Popovics book on Hall effect devices [12].
Popovic has also contributed innovations to the field of optical sensors (the first silicon selective ultra-violet detector [13] and pioneering work on CMOS integrated arrays of single-photon avalanche photodiodes [14]). He is also the main inventor of the single-electron bipolar avalanche transistor (fabricated in CMOS technology, operates at room temperature) [15], [16].
