Siara Ruth Isaac
Upon completing my B.Sc. Honours in Chemistry at McGill University in Montreal, I departed for China to teach chemistry in the International Baccalaureate program. Although I greatly enjoyed teaching, 2 years of the cultural challenges of being foreign and nearly illiterate in Chinese hastened my return to the intellectual challenges of academic life.
I returned to McGill for my M.Sc. with Dr. Masad Damha in the design and synthesis of novel analogues to DNA and RNA. Using traditional lab glassware and pungent solvents, I synthesized novel replacements to the fundamental alphabet of DNA (A, C, G and T). Using a modern version of the 'Gene Machine', first developed by Dr. Kevin Ogilvie at McGill, I strung my modified nucleosides into chains of DNA and probed their physical behaviour and stability.
During this period, I had a wonderful opportunity to further develop my teaching philosophy and skills through my participation in the Tomlinson Project in University Level Science Education. First, as a Tomlinson Teaching Fellow (2004-06) and then as the Coordinator (2006-08) for the unique teaching development workshops offered by science graduate students for science graduate students. My TA responsibilities in Chemistry ranged from working with small groups in the lab to offering tutorials for 1000+ students.
Upon graduation, I moved to France and joined the Innovation Conception et Accompagnement pour la Pedagogie team at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1. Intially I was an Academic developer (2008-2011) and then the Team leader for the pôle pédagogie (2011-2012), where I worked with professors and teaching teams on a variety of teaching improvement initiatives.
I arrived at EPFL in 2012 and work most closely with the sections CGC, SIE and SEE. Teaching pedagogical development workshops is one of my preferred activities and the extension of this work to reach PhD candidates and tutors in 2014 has been a pleasure.
