Véronique Suttels is a senior clinician scientist at the Laboratoray for Intelligent Global Health & Humanitarian Response Technologies (LiGHT) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) since September 2025. She finished her PhD on AI-assisted lung ultrasound for the detection of tuberculosis at LiGHT-EPFL and Lausanne University in March 2025. She earned her medical degree in 2012 from Ghent University (Belgium) and completed a postgraduate diploma in Tropical Medicine and International Health at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (Belgium) in 2014. Following her training in internal medicine, she served as an Infectious Diseases fellow and attending physician at the Lausanne University Hospital from 2018 to 2020 and again from 2022 to 2024.
She worked as a voluntary physician in Madagascar in 2014-2015, and works as a partner scientist at the National Center for Pneumology and Tuberculosis in Cotonou, Benin since 2021. During her PhD, she was the principal investigator for the Benin site in a multicenter study on AI-assisted lung ultrasound for tuberculosis detection in endemic regions (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT05423847).
Her research has received significant funding, including a major grant from the Horizon Europe EDCTP3 program for the CAD LUS4TB project—Computer-assisted diagnosis with lung ultrasound for community-based pulmonary tuberculosis triage in Benin, Mali, and South Africa—where she serves as principal investigator.
Mission
My mission is to advance equitable respiratory health through innovation, capacity building, and collaborative research. With a strong focus on poverty-related diseases, particularly tuberculosis, I work to improve access to high-quality diagnostics and strengthen local expertise in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Current Work
As Principal Investigator of the EDCTP3-funded CAD LUS4TB project since September 2025, I am committed to developing and evaluating innovative approaches that can expand access to effective TB diagnosis and care where they are needed most.
